Preview the Dream Warriors

Meet the Dream Warriors, Thomas and his teddy bear Nate, two heroes keeping the Dreamscape safe from the Dark, the nightmare shades of the Boogeyman.

Join them on their debut adventure into the Dreamscape, a realm shaped by wonder, a wild-frontier of upside down environments, purple grass and floating islands, in a turquoise sky, a realm shaped by the imagination. Guided by his teddy bear, Nate, Thomas discovers his inner strength, and forgets the sickness of his cancer, the Dreamscape allows Thomas to project and share his joy for life, to become gallant and bold, just like the stories of Knights of old.

The Dream Warriors is a middle grade graphic novel that is coming in Fall 2022, with a Kickstarter launch scheduled for Spring 2022. A bittersweet adventure, that explores a very different part of the Teddy’verse and a story inspired by the courage of child cancer patients everywhere.

Adventures ahead!

The Dream Warriors

  • Thomas – Just your average ten year old kid who loves comics, video games and stories about knights, a kid that is full of energy and life, or he would be if he wasn’t in a children’s cancer ward with bone cancer. This is his story of life, joy and adventure
  • Nathanial (Nate) – his teddy bear and spirit guide to the Dreamscape, this loyal companion brings Thomas to the Dreamscape, so he can be a normal child, with the time he has left, and forget the cancer ravaging his body.

The Story behind the Dream Warriors by Nick Davis

The Dream Warriors is a story that has been percolating in my head for the last few years, as I was busy finishing the Night Guardians series off. With the inaugural Teddyverse story complete I could turn my attention to the story of Thomas and Nate, his teddy bear. But, what inspired me to write a tale about a child with cancer who goes off on adventures into the Dreamscape with this teddy bear? Well… Read on…

In 2012 I wrote a silly story about a Teddy Bear who defended his child against the Monsters under the bed. I called it A Teddy Bear Tale and had the story illustrated by Maryland Artist Dan Nokes.

The story never really sold a lot, but it did manage to touch some lives. I heard stories from parents how the book helped their child sleep with the lights off, or how Tristan, or one of his fellow Cuddly Defenders helped their child get over their general anxiety.

Three years ago I heard the bittersweet story of Nathaniel, when his Mother emailed me. In 2013 Nathaniel turned nine years old, like every kid his age, he was rambunctious, full of energy and life. He also had a favorite cuddly toy, an Orca (God Of The Sea) that he slept with every night. Sadly, also in 2013 he was diagnosed with cancer and lost part of his right arm to the disease.

Nathaniel’s father found a picture of Tristan the Teddy Bear defending his child from the Monsters under the bed online, he brought the book and it soon became a family favorite, giving Nathaniel the peace and courage he needed, and knowing his Orca was watching over him, he slept better at night. Unfortunately Nathaniel’s story has sadly ended later that year, with the cancer was too much for his young body, he passed away on Christmas Eve of that year.

The Dream Warriors story is inspired by and is a tribute to Nathanial, and for all child cancer patients everywhere, showcasing the courage they show fighting against this disease. Below is my video reaction at the time of learning the news and sharing it with fans of A Teddy Bear Tale and you can read the corresponding news article in the Avenue News published a week later.
